June 2023 Newsletter
The highlight of the month was the culmination of our Annual Interdisciplinary Project - ‘Our Common Home; Our Shared Future’ that marked World Environment Day. The project itself was primarily inspired by our Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and the 4th Universal Apostolic Preference of the Society of Jesus, passionately pursued by our Director, Fr. Paul D’Souza SJ. Both, very strongly placing humans at the centre of the crisis - acknowledging that we are part of the problem and inviting us to be part of the solution.
The Dance Musical organised by our Music & the Arts Team, showcased dance, movement pieces, a mime routine, choral and orchestral works - I am the Earth by Gyln Lehmann and Prakriti by the Nepali band, The Shadows. These were all based on the theme assigned to each class from LKG to Class 10.
The rest of the classes along with their teachers put up their own exhibitions on their learnings and action projects through the project month. Class 9 especially looked at National and Global Solidarity and Action against the background of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, some students performing a street folk dance from the Jal Jungle Jameen movement.
The Village Zone Representatives of the Parent Guardian Council participated in the Village Zone Impact Award organised by our Health & Community Team - they were to choose a village-level activity in line with our project and engage the village and present their impact through an exhibition at the culmination. Purbong Village Zone received the Impact Award.
One of the major attractions was the Kodo Kanteen, a commemoration of the International Year of Millets. We were all sold out within an hour of opening. The total footfall was estimated to be over a thousand people excluding our students and staff, with institutions like SUMI,Kalimpong Girls’ High School and Chitra Bhanu in attendance, as well as officials from the education, social welfare and child protection departments.
We were invited by the District Magistrate to perform at the Circuit House for the State-level Standing Committee of the Information & Cultural Services and Youth Services & Sports Departments. We also performed at the State Convention on Child Rights at Kalimpong Town Hall.
On the last day before Summer Break and after our First Term Exams, our Class 9 students and staff organised a Monsoon Clean Up Drive, cleaning the drains along the approach road to the school. School will reopen on July 10.
